"I’m 23 and was born and raised in the UK. My focus has always been towards visual experimentation in graphic design and typography in particular. I’m currently based in Munich, Germany - working for Bureau Borsche.
I find it hard to accuratley pin-point the style of work I create, though I have noticed a few recurring themes I tend to explore. I publish a lot of work which is purely visual experiments in both typography and graphic design - therefore much of it exists without any real meaning or context due to the lack of restraints. Quite often I relish in this lack of meaning as it allows me to not take my work too seriously and add an element of satire. This goes for a lot of the typographic exploration I do - often I’ll disregard the meaning of the words / phrases in favour of it’s visual impact. Often I feel a little deluded by graphic design elitism which seems to take itself too seriously so I try and take a step back once in a while.
History has been my secondary passion so its always managed to find a way into my explorative work. I’m fascinated by art / design movements of the past and the ideology associated with them. In each case, there was almost complete surrender to a defined manifesto which was then considered absolute. It’s interesting to me how important but seemingly transient these movements were and how elements within them can be explored by drawing them out of their historic context. This mixing of historic context has been a running theme in a lot of my work - something I like to call ‘Archaic Futurism’ due to its complete disregard of chronology".
Nu Groove Records has released during its four years of existence (1988-1992), a large catalogue of records that would become the foundation of the New York house scene. Knowing a bit similar path as Gherkin Records in Chicago, the amount of future dons in the global house scene it revealed is underrated but no less important: Bobby Konders, Frankie Bones, Joey Beltram or The Burrell Brothers. Those latter, Rheji and Ronald, had numerous aliases on the imprint, sometimes independently. The Utopia Project is one of the ones hold by Rheji Burrell, and delivers what New York House had the best to offer, jazzy elements in a groove built around cosmic synths.
